Planning backwards is a design approach I’ve honed my craft in after years of being an educator and planning yearlong curriculum. This backwards design approach continually shows up in designing experiences for end users and I’ve recently seen it highlighted in Erika Hall’s book, Just Enough Research.

Start with the answers. In creating an impactful survey start backwards with the answers that you want. From that list, flip those answers into questions and you will end up with a clear direction in achieving your survey goals. Here are two examples emulated from Hall’s book:

Answer: x% of users are ages 30–40.

Question: How old are you?

Answer: Leaderboards are not valued by our active users.

Question: On a scale of 1–5, how would likely would you use a leaderboard feature?
